What Does an Adult ADHD Evaluation Include?
Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation
We review your current concerns, symptoms, psychiatric history, medical history, previous treatment, medications, functioning, and treatment goals.
ADHD Symptom Assessment
Standardized ADHD rating scales and clinical assessment tools may be used to evaluate patterns of attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive functioning.
Childhood and Developmental History
Because ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, your provider will explore whether attention, organization, impulsivity, or related difficulties were present earlier in life.
Current Functioning
We look at how symptoms may affect work, school, relationships, finances, household responsibilities, organization, and everyday life.
Evaluation for Other Possible Causes
Your evaluation may consider anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, medical conditions, medication effects, substance use, and other factors.
Additional ADHD Testing When Appropriate
Some individuals may benefit from additional objective or computerized attention testing as part of their evaluation.
ADHD Testing Is Only One Part of the Picture
There is no single test that can determine whether someone has ADHD.
A thoughtful evaluation considers your symptoms, developmental history, daily functioning, standardized assessments, psychiatric and medical history, and other factors that may affect attention.
The goal is not simply to assign a diagnosis. It is to help you better understand why you are experiencing these difficulties and what may help.
What Happens After the Evaluation?
Once the assessment is complete, your provider will review the findings with you and discuss appropriate next steps.
Recommendations may include:
ADHD treatment when clinically appropriate
Medication management
Behavioral and organizational strategies
Psychotherapy recommendations
Additional psychological or neuropsychological testing
Evaluation of sleep or medical concerns
Coordination with another healthcare professional
Referral for services outside the scope of Thrivewell Health
Receiving an ADHD diagnosis does not automatically mean medication will be prescribed. Treatment recommendations are individualized based on your needs, health history, symptoms, preferences, and clinical findings.
